You may or may not have seen the poignant and powerful documentary, Seaspiracy, which premiered on Netflix on March 24th, 2021. Seaspiracy is produced by Kip Anderson, the revolutionary film producer and documentarian that brought us Cowspiracy and What The Health. Seaspiracy addresses the environmental impact and loss of life caused by the fishing industry, due to the ceaseless human drive for sea animal products. According to the film, an estimated 2.7 trillion sea animals are violently removed from the oceans every year. If we continue at this pace, we face a barren ocean by the year 2048! As the ocean provides 50% of the planet’s oxygen supply, this is a dire prediction. The film also addresses the monumental impact of plastic pollution on our ocean – 46% of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (which is 1.5 million sq kms in size) is comprised of fishing net debris.
Fortunately, this documentary comes on the heels of a mass awakening: the public is becoming increasingly focused on reducing their environmental footprint, moving towards plant-derived foods and goods, and doing their part to protect Mother Earth and our future legacy here.
Going vegan is one of the most impactful ways to protect our oceans, reduce our carbon footprint, and save countless animal lives – and it has never been easier to do! So many new plant-based products are continuing to enter the market – and they keep getting better and better! In the spirit of protecting our oceans, I wanted to share some of the best plant-based “seafood” products that I have found.
